 what's HR 7661?

HOUSE RESOLUTION 7661 restricts children to reading books that meet the "moral standards" of Republican politicians.

HR 7661 would remove from school libraries and curriculum any book that includes “sexually oriented material.” It would apply to all US public schools — making it an attempt at a nationwide book ban. The wording is deliberately vague, but the message is clear: Unless you’re 18, you can’t see references to sex, nudity, gender identity, or (and this was specifically mentioned) lewd dancing. Yikes! We can't have kids learning about that!

According to Authors Against Book Bans, "
HR 7661 is largely political theater, introduced by an unpopular MAGA Republican playing to her base in advance of a tough primary challenge this fall." But the bill has 17 co-signers in the House Committee on Education and Workforce and has progressed out of committee and into the House. And if we have learned anything in the last year, no amount of overreach or outrageous abuse of power is beyond the scope of this administration. This bill could be voted into law.

Read House Resolution 7661's wording here. You'll see why we need to act now.

How are books challenged? In many schools, a single challenge by a parent can require librarians to pull a book off the shelves while there is public debate over reinstating it.

"Sexual content" is cited In 61% of the challenges. Project 2025 proposed it, and now House Resolution 7661 seeks to make it law: they want any book that refers to sex criminalized as "porn." Books such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, and Peter Pan are among the thousands they want to categorize as “pornography” and outlaw nationwide. Selling or loaning these books would then be a criminal act, so educators, booksellers, and librarians could be prosecuted as sex offenders.

Read Project 2025's actual wording on banning books here. Brace yourself; it's scary stuff. Like something out of Fahrenheit 451 or 1984.
